All five species of Pacific Salmon (in season), giant Halibut, record
class Ling Cod, along with abundant Rock Fish and Dolly Varden are
available at Raspberry Island Lodge. The protected waters of Raspberry
Strait in front of the Lodge allow enjoyable fishing for the person not
well suited to ocean swells and for those times when weather conditions
make outside waters unpleasant. As with fishing anywhere in Alaska,
timing your visit to match the fish runs is critical to success. Pick
the species you would like to target, and use the fish run table as a
guide for the best dates to plan your trip. The exact peak of each run
may vary a week or so from one year to the next but the table is
reasonably accurate. All deep water fishing gear, bait and lures used in the boats for halibut, trolling for salmon, jigging, etc., is provided.
If
you would like to fish the streams, stream mouths, or salt water by
casting or fly fishing, be sure to bring your favorite casting or fly
gear. Light to medium spinning gear loaded with 4 to 8 lb. test line
works well for the Dollies. Reds and silvers usually require medium
range spinning or casting gear loaded with new
8 to 16 lb. line. Fly fishing options are 5 to 6 weight rods with a
floating and fast sinking uniform sink line for Dolly Varden. Salmon
require rods in the 7 to 9 weight category with a floating, deep water
express or teeny nymph line in 300 or 400 gr. A mid range uniform
sinking line will round out your arsenal. Sinkers for additional weight
on the tippet can be important. If you are unaccustomed to fighting
powerful fish, the heavier gear will be advantageous. If you live for
doing battle with powerful fish fresh from the salt on light tackle,
bring the lighter rods and reels...and a spare or two. Fast action rods
provide better fish fighting ability. Medium action rods dictate a
heavier line weight. For the truly adventurous anglers, we can also
target the Salmon Shark. These brutes can go to 600lbs!!!
